Bill Shatz Joins Tampa Coaching Staff

Bill Shatz is in his first season as an assistant coach after being named to the Spartans staff in the fall of 2019. Shatz has been involved in lacrosse as a player, coach, leader and business executive for more than 40 years.

He is no stranger to the Sunshine State Conference, spending two years on staff at Florida Southern College. Shatz served as the Director of Lacrosse at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he launched the IMG lacrosse program and served as the National Team's head coach.

At IMG Academy, Shatz led his squad to a national ranking in just its second year of existence and earned a top-10 ranking in each season during his tenure. More than 60.0 percent of his players at IMG went on to play Division I men's lacrosse, and IMG won more than 90.0 percent of its games under his leadership to become one of the top prep school programs in the country.

Prior to his time at IMG Academy, Shatz coached at Freedom High School in nearby Tampa where he developed the nationally-renowned "DoubleCrosse" system of play. His system turned Freedom into one of the top programs in the state of Florida and produced several All-Americans. He also founded the Tampa Bay Fire lacrosse club, where he trained and developed more than 40 high school All-Americans. Bill also co-founded the American Indoor Lacrosse Association. where he was instrumental in developing the model that integrates box lacrosse training and tactics with field lacrosse strategies.

Shatz is a national leader with US Lacrosse and has held several positions including President of the Gulf Coast Chapter and High School Area Chairman. He was a member of the selector staff that evaluated and selected players to the US National U-19 team that won the 2012 world championships. In 2018, Bill was selected to the US Lacrosse Gulf Coast Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport as a coach and executive. 

A 1980 graduate of Ithaca College, Shatz was a four-year starter at attack for the Bombers and finished as one of the top scorers in school history. He also holds a master's degree from Yale University and served as a commissioned officer in the US Navy from 1984-1996.

UT Prospect Camp and Youth Resident Camp highlight summer camp program

University of Tampa Head Coach, Rory Whipple announced on March 7th, 2021 the schedule for this year's summer camp program. The UT WhipLax Summer Prospect Camp will be held from July 5th - July 7th, 2021 for all lacrosse athletes interested in attending University of Tampa. Later in the month, the UT WhipLax Summer Resident Camp will be held July 19 - July 21st, 2021. This overnight camp is focused on youth and high school lacrosse athletes interested in expanding their technical, athletic, and competitive skill sets. These three-day sessions start at 1:00pm of the first day and conclude at 4pm on the last day of camp. 

TheWhipLax Prospect Camp is highly-regarded  and is geared and delivered to the serious student-athlete with  a strong interest in UT's nationally-ranked lacrosse program and the University’s exceptional range of academic programs, services, and degrees. UT’s lacrosse program conducts these prospect camps as one of the primary assessment opportunities of student-athletes exploring the process while considering application to the University.

Demand for both camps run strong,  spaces are limited, and registrations fill-up fast. For student-athletes seriously interested in selecting UT as their school/program of choice, the Prospect Camp is a must. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to register without delay.
